So what would you do if you found yourself on the wrong side of a locked office floor door, with your keys inside, on a Sunday?

Well, first you might call a co-worker who is close by and might have a key, which is where I came into the picture… only I didn’t have a key (despite trying every key I had about 7 times hoping one of my office keys worked for this door). So on to Plan B…. check with the building guard…

Nope. None of his keys work either. Search the phone…. call another guy…. dangit, he’s not there. Ok, time to start thinking outside the box (I can’t admit defeat!). Hmm….. are those hinges on the outside of that door? Brilliant! Someone’s idiotic design can work to our advantage! Off to find some tools (in the offices I did have keys for, as I expect the hinges to not come out easily). Small screwdriver and needlenose pliers, these’ll hopefully work. Let’s try the needlenose first…. *plink*. Wow, that was easy. *plink* *plink*. Ok, let’s open this baby… Hmmm…. maybe this design wasn’t so idiotic. That door just doesn’t want to swing out that way, despite our many efforts to get the right leverage. Argh…. ok, let’s assess the situtation. That door isn’t budging, I have grease all over my hands now, and there’s no hinges. Err… let’s get those hinges back on before we screw this door up too much.

So alright, on to Plan F or so… we can get into the neighboring offices and see if the wall goes all the way to the ceiling (hey… someone put hinges on the outside of a door… it could be possible!!!). Popping a few ceiling tiles in office to office… nope. Strike out again. Sorry whomever’s office I just dropped ceiling dust all over the floor and desk… the cleaning crew will get it tomorrow.

I’m seriously starting to think defeat could be possible here, but I’m still not willing to give up. Let’s go back to the scene and rethink this through. What other options do I have? I can’t do the credit card trick (thought of that already) as the latch goes the other way. Hmm… there is some space there though. Let’s see what I can do with this screwdriver. Hey… I can just barely get a little traction on this latch, but I need another piece. Back to one of those offices to see what I can find. Aha! This PC slot cover might just do the trick. Back to the door!! Come on baby, you can open for me. I just gotta get this screwdriver in just the right spot…. almost…. almost…. wait, let me flip this slot cover over the top here…. almoooost got it…… YEA!!!! Let me grab the door before I lose this!!!!! GOT IT!!!! Success!!! Quick, now go get your keys before we do something dumb in our elation like let the door close again before unlocking it.
